The Past Week Reminds Me Why I Love Analytics in the Philippines

When I left the U.S. five years ago, it was to chase a dream.

The dream although simple to me was one that many people thought impossible at the time… to see analytics becoming a topic of everyday conversations.

In business, in education, in the government and in the media over the past week, I have been part of conversations about how to empower 100,000s of Filipinos to get more analytics in what they do.

There is still so much to be done to turn this dream into a reality, but as I have talked with journalists, professors, political figures and business leaders, I keep getting the same result… the dream is now one that many share.

Some examples of the new reality…

The Analytics Association of the Philippines (AAP.PH) will be the umbrella on which so many analytics initiatives incubate, grow and prosper.

Schools like De La Salle – College of St. Benilde, the University of Asia & Pacific, and UP will continue to offer new and innovative courses built around regional standards for the enablement of data science and analytics.

New batches of students like CSB’s SMIT students taking Business Analytics subjects will enter the workforce armed with more skills then any batch before them.  They kids are learning Tableau while still in school. How cool is that?

Advocacies like Augment BPO will rise up to address clear and present threats like the one that AI presents to the BPO industry.

And that’s just the tip of the proverbial ice berg.

It’s been a really good week.  No, check that… its been a great week.

And it all reminds me of why I love this adopted country of mine so much.

Teaching Analytics: APEC List of Competencies

Teaching Analytics: An Instructor’s Guide to implementing the recommendations of Project DARE (Data Analytics Raising Employment).

APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) hosted an event on May 4-5 bringing together over 50 analytics experts and visionaries from over 14 counties across the Asia-Pacific region to form an advisory group.

The APEC Project DARE (Data Analytics Raising Awareness) Advisory Group started with an agenda set to develop recommended “APEC Data Analytics Competencies.

There are still being finalized, but as of last week here is a high level of the competencies that we came up with:

Business and Organizational Skills

  1. Operational Analytics: Use data analytics and specialized business analytics (i.e. business intelligence) techniques for the investigation of all relevant data to derive insight in support of decision-making.
  2. Data Visualization and Presentation: Ability to create and communicate compelling and actionable insights from data using visualization and presentation tools and technologies.
  3. Data Management and Governance: Develop and implement data management strategies and governance, incorporating privacy, data security, polices and regulations, and ethical considerations.
  4. Domain Knowledge and Application: Apply domain-related knowledge and insights to effectively contextualize data, achieved by practical experience (e.g. apprenticeships) and exposure to emerging innovations.

Technical Skills

  1. Statistical Techniques: Apply statistical concepts and methodologies for data analysis.
  2. Computing: Apply information technology, computational thinking and utilize programming languages and software and hardware solutions design and development for data analysis.
  3. Data Analytics Methods and Algorithms: Capture, clean and inspect data. Evaluate and implement data analytics and machine learning methods and algorithms on the data to derive insights for decision making.
  4. Research Methods: Utilize the scientific and engineering methods to discover and create new knowledge and insights.
  5. Data Science Engineering Principles: Use software and system engineering principles and modern computer technologies, incorporating a data feedback loop, to research, design, and prototype data analytics applications. Develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, and systems to support the data lifecycle.

Workplace Skills

  1. 21st Century Skills: Exhibit crosscutting skills essential for DSA at all levels including, but not limited too; collaboration, customer focus, communication and storytelling, organizational awareness, critical thinking, planning and organizing, problem solving, decision making, business fundamentals, awareness of social and societal awareness, intelligibility, cross cultural awareness, dynamic (self) re-skilling, professional networking, ethical mindset and entrepreneurship.

Once this list is finalized I will update you all.

My end goal is two fold, (1) to help craft a version of the competencies into an academic discipline that the Analytics Council can present to CHED for adoption and (2) to design a vocational education track to address the basic skills needed for entry level DSA work here in the Philippines.

Stay Tuned!

Analytics in the Philippines 2020

The year 2020 used to sound like it was so far off in the future.

Yet, there it is on the calendar… just a little more then 2.5 years away.

recipes-for-unlocking-value-from-big-data-3-638

2017 is the fifth year of my original five year plan for DMAIPH.

Now I’m starting to think about the next big strategic plan and for this iteration I’m gonna work with a 2.5 year plan. Because things are evolving so quickly when it comes to analytics in the Philippines.

For the rest of 2017 the big goal is to evolve our public and in-house training options with our partners at Ariva Events Management and the Rock Stars of Data.

At the same time we will work in solidifying several key business partnerships with the Analytics Council, APEC Project DARE, BASE (Business Analytics Society of Educators), Data Science Philippines and Global Chamber Manila.

There are so many amazing things happening right now in the Philippines that about a year ago seemed to be distant horizon stuff. Its both amazing and a little scary to think where things might be a year for now. Let alone 5.

17426122_1095825400562902_5936762267508985241_nSo the birth of the 2.5 year strategy plan is here.

By 2017, my goal was to make DMAIPH one of the top names in analytics in the Philippines. Mission accomplished.

By 2020, my goal is to make DMAIPH “the” top name for analytics training in the Philippines.

Come along for the ride!

Business Strategy with Analytics – Aligning a business strategy to drive an organization forward requires a robust analytics solution. Businesses who have good analytics tend to be much more profitable and efficient then ones that do not. DMAIPH has helped dozens of companies in both the U.S. and the Philippines with adding more data analysis in their business strategy. Data Science Philippines – Feb 2017 Meet Up

My talk is the 2nd one, a little over half way through the video. Listen first to some real data scientists talking about their trade, then it’s my turn where I talk about just how many data scientists there are in the  Philippines right now. Thanks to DataSeer for asking us to sponsor and for setting up the event. Looking forward to many more to come! 🙂

This I Why I Do What I Do…

This is why I do what I do…

Ron: Hi Mr. Dan Meyer, I have attended Data Science Philippines Meetup last February 22. And listened to your talk. I am a graduating student, and a former Data Scientist Intern. I want to be a Data Scientist, but Companies need an experienced person to be their data scientist. I just want to ask, what job should I take first to become a Data Scientist soon? Thank you for reading my message, hope you’ll answer me.

Dan: Data Analyst. IT Staff. Development Staff. Anything where you get to use data everyday. This will give you some hands on experience that you can use to more towards data science. Basically you need to get practical experience coding and managing data. Hope that helps. SQL is probably the most versatile language to learn, but any of the ones you see listed in a data science job posting will help.

Ron: Thank you for the response Mr. Dan Meyer, I’ll keep it in my mind, that really helps. I am hoping to be just like you soon.

Looking Ahead To The Most Awesome Analytics Year Ever

A little over 5 years ago my Analytics Story begun.

The first year was all about validating my business plan of being an analytics resource to Filipino schools, companies and to a large number of Filipinos themselves.

The 2nd year was taking the concept, basic analytics training, and getting it in front of a variety of audiences to see what where the biggest needs in the marketplace.

Year Three saw us start focusing on the things that gave me both profit and satisfaction. Trainings for groups of professionals who were hungry to get more analytics into their businesses.

By the 4th year my priorities evolved to firming up the foundation of the business to ensure smooth operations so that I could focus more on what I do best; empowering analysts to use data to drive decision-making.

Last year saw it all come together. Year 5 was all about building a network to take my passion and do much more with it then my small team could take on alone. I trained more Filipinos across a wider range of need then I could have imagined. And yeah, we made a nice profit too. Also got my first analytics book published.

img_7910Now, as I look at year six I see the fruits of our blood, sweat and tears and I see nothing but growth. More and more Filipinos empowered to use data, across an even wider swath of backgrounds and in an ever increasing footprint.

2017 is going to be the most awesome analytics year ever, not just for me. Not just for my business. But for my beloved adopted home, the Philippines.

No Two Days Alike…

I’m the kind of person who craves change.

I get bored kinda easily if I’m doing something routine.

But once I hit a spot where my passion can intersect with a new task, I go all in.

img_8168

It’s not really a short attention span.

I just like trying new things.

Thats why analytics is so amazing to me.

Looking at ever changing data to discover patterns and answer questions.

Helping people get turned on to a career as an analyst or helping a business in need of some analytics guidance is among my favorite things.

As I look towards the road ahead, I see lots and lots of  new experiences, new places and new challenges.

For me, no two days are ever the same.

And I love it!

The Huge Growth Opportunity of Analytics in the Philippines

The Philippines is standing on the precipice of a huge opportunity.

We are in a similar place to where we were 10 years ago when the Call Center Industry was just taking off.

Now instead of becoming a global hub for customer service calls, the opportunity is becoming a center for analytics and data science.

There is nowhere to go but up.

Here is why…

  • A well-documented need for analytics talent globally.
  • A youthful workforce of English speakers with an affinity for Western Culture.
  • Leadership from within the government and higher education pushing the inclusion of analytics and data science into college and even high school curriculums.
  • A vibrant work force of young professionals that have experience working for international companies and assisting people from all over the world.
  • A strong sense of self-preservation in the BPO industry to offer “up the value chain” services to their clients.
  • Industry leaders and business owners with an insatiable appetite to keep the county’s economic momentum in growth mode.
  • A collection of thought leaders, analytics experts and actual data scientists that are
highly motivated to lead the country to data-driven success.

There are undoubtedly many more.

The bottom line is 2017 is looking like it will be the year the analytics and data science are firmly established as strengths of doing business in and with the Philippines.
