10 Points Where There is a Need for a Data Science Consultancy

My good friend Albert Gavino recently posted about why there is such a strong need right now for data science consultancies.

Bert is a data scientist in the truest sense of the word. So when he listed 10 reasons, which I think are spot on, I asked him if I could share. The 10 reasons are:

  1. Some (if not most) companies want to get into it, but are not sure if they need it.
  2. They need direction on how to do it.
  3. They need information on how much to invest in data science infrastructure
  4. They need people with skill sets to be able to implement data science
  5. Some are biased towards proprietary software while some like the open source guys like Apache.
  6. CEOs think it’s all about big data
  7. Data Science is continually evolving so don’t ask me about AI and deep learning….it’s still transforming things
  8. How much does it cost to consult for a data science? pretty high because we all know demand and supply in this industry
  9. Recruiters confuse programming languages and tools such as R, Python, SPSS, SAS, matlab, spark, scala, hadoop, hive, mahout (there are just too many out there they would get lost)
  10. There is a gap in our Academic Curriculum where they just teach electives such as Business Analytics which does lack a lot of information to the needs of the industry.

So if the point is not already clear, there is a growing difference between the haves and the have nots when it comes to analytics and data science.

Given the nature of LinkedIn as a social network for professionals, I try to devote as much time as connecting with people like you as possible.

That’s pretty much it.

Analytics training is something that just about every business can benefit from. Being exposed to new ideas and approaches to using data allows a business to stay on the cutting edge of big data and data science. That’s what I love to do. Empowering the use of analytics.

An Analytics Guidebook for the Filipino Recruitment Professional

My next book will be out shortly, and it is born out of a need to help the tens of thousands of professionals involved in recruitment in the Philippines.

I have conducted dozens of HR and Recruitment seminars and spoken at least as many recruitment themed events over the past few years.

The most consistent feeling across all of my interactions with Filipinos involved in recruitment is one of almost overwhelming challenge. There are simply not enough qualified candidates to fill open job postings. And even when candidates are hired, the % who attrit prematurely is at an all-time high.

This disparity between supply of qualified talent and demand of open jobs has continued to widen over the past several years. This is especially true for jobs that require a certain level of proficiency in foreign languages and high tech computer skills. The boom in the number of BPO and call center jobs in the Philippines is the biggest reason for this inequity between supply and demand.

Don’t Let Fear of Technology Doom Your Recruiting Efforts

One of the biggest challenges facing Recruitment professionals across the Philippines (and the world) today is a fear of technology. I hear this all the time when I talk with those involved in recruitment.

Know How to Make a Profit

I have been self-employed for 4.5 years now.

Some tell me that’s remarkable, but I am just doing what I do best. Sharing my passion for analytics.

Depending on how you measure success, I have had some pretty good successes. But also some pretty amazing failures too.

I get why so many small business fail. It take a lot of perseverance to rely just on yourself and a small circle of supporters for your livelihood.

So at this point in my career, almost 5 years of being the man after 20 years of working for the man, I know how to make a profit.

First off I have to stick to my plan. Allow for it to evolve and be flexible, but year in and year out I stick to the plan on being the name brand in analytics in the Philippines.

Second, I create a lot of content. If content is good and in my case, I can humbly say it is. People will pay for it. Books, Blogs, Conferences, Public Seminars and In House Trainings all help to generate revenue. Its all from me brain, its all based on content in my head. As long as I can create engaging content, I can make money.

Third, I have to live within my means. Always keep one eye on the future. Trust the right people. Business acumen like that which balances success with failure enough that I can keep going.

The next key is that you have to be connected. Know what’s hot now and what will be hot. I read a lot. I follow a lot of things via social media. I keep myself informed on what’s going on with my customers, my future customers, my competitors and those who can influence my business. In short I am constantly networking.

And finally you have to love what you do. I can’t imagine any small business owner who can survive long without the passion that comes from deep inside. Its near impossible to make a profit without any passion behind it.

So how do I know how to make a profit?

I have lived it.

Monetize Our Content

It really is not that hard to create a lot of content.

Maybe for me it’s easier than most because I like to talk, I like to write, I like to share and I like to educate.

But it’s still not as hard as so many other things people do every day to make money.

What is hard is creating content that is engaging. That enables curiosity and bring an emotional response. Content that is truly enchanting is rare.

If you can create engaging content, then you should be monetizing it.

There are so many ways to make money off of good content. Sometimes it takes some creativity. Sometimes it takes extra effort. Occasionally you have to spend money upfront to make money long term.

For DMAI we have a lot of content. Here is how we monetize it.

Books are the most traditional method. Given the amount of writing I have done on analytics these past few years, there is enough content for a half dozen books. And there are hundreds more in my head. Publishing a book and selling it on the side at speaking engagements is a nice, but fairly inconsistent revenue stream. But it is a good place to start.

E-Books is less costly than traditional books, but as whole still far popular. Getting people to pay for online content remains a very elusive prospect for most content creators. Still having that option available will add a little more revenue over time for very little cost.

Online only content for sale is another option. One I have as of yet, not tried. But again if there is a such a needs for analytics training and the ability to speak in person is limited, then providing online only content for a reasonable fee makes a lot of sense.

Webinars and videos are additional online revenue options. Getting people to pay for a series of online trainings is not something I have seem work with much success. YouTube kinda makes that nearly impossible. But in some cases, where you an offer a high quality production that delivers as well as the in person trainings do is something that some people would pay for. Need to look into this one some more.

Still though, the best money maker for DMAI is the fees I get when speaking or conducting training. The market price for these events continues to rise as the reality of their not being enough analytics experts to go around combines with the pressure people feel to get more out of their time and look to analytics as the solution.

That is why we are already planning our 2017 training schedule, blocking off dates for big events and getting on the calendars of companies looking for in house training.

Monetizing our content is not hard, it just takes sticking to a plan.

Get In Front of People

The single biggest asset to my business is me.

Knowing this helps guide my strategic plan.

The more I am in front of people talking about analytics the more the business will prosper.

The more people who here me talk about analytics will get excited and start believing they can master analytics too.

The more attendees, trainees and audiences who learn something from me, the more referrals to follow.

Branding for any company is all about building something that sticks in the minds of its customers as it also attracts new customers. Great brands don’t have to market themselves as much as they do just continue to do what they do best.

That has always been the goal of DMAI. To market me to the point where we are the name brand in analytics in the Philippines.

Engage The Network

Networking. Why do some many people fail at it? What do the great networkers have in common that make them great? What should you do when your networking efforts don’t produce the results you expect?

Asking myself these questions a lot lately.

I know a lot about networking strategy and have seen the master’s do it well. I have a lot of experience in marketing myself and my business. I have built a strong and recognizable brand. In many ways I am an expert on networking.

Yet networking is not easy for me. I am never really satisfied with my results. I am perpetually adding and creating and sharing. It’s in my DNA. But it’s still not easy.

When I talk about analytics I get energized. The more I talk about analytics the more energy I have to put into networking. Passing out business cards while sharing my story is awesome. Having people tell me they follow my blog and enjoy my writing is super awesome. Being in front of a crowd of curious minds who want to know more about analytics is super awesome x 1000.

So for me to engage my network, I can do a lot in person. But there are so many hours in a day I can devote to that. So engaging via social media is key to building the network substantially. Social media is 24/7 and can attract people who never have a chance to see me in person.

I have a marketing plan for engaging people via personal interactions.

I have a marketing plan based on appearing at events, conferences and schools.

I have a social media marketing plan for sharing content online.

And I have a media plan to build the network through more traditional methods as well.

You have to have these plans written out so people can follow them.

You have to talk about them constantly so people understand them.

You have to measure them consistently so you know if people are engaged with them.

That’s networking. That’s how I do it.
