Analytics in the Philippines: It Either Happens in 2017 or It Might Never Happen

A few years ago the then country manager of IBM Philippines, Mariels Winhoffer, kicked off a project to help push the Philippines towards being an analytics hub for the booming growth in Big Data and the Global Analytics Talent War. That was in 2013.

With 3 factors in play; the world calls outsourcing services of the Philippines, the exponential growth of Big Data the fact that the demand for analytics talent far out weighs the supply; it makes total sense that the Philippines step up and fill the need. Now in 2017 we have not really gotten much closer.

There are some schools offering some subjects in analytics related areas, but its far from being significant enough to meet the needs.

The government has given some attention to supercharging analytics, but the current outlook is not one where we will see enough to propel us forward.

Big BPO companies who are offering analytics as a service have tried desperately to fill seats,  but have generally seen limited success.

Now it seems that most Filipino companies have gotten a grasp of the power of a good analytics team and are trying to catch up.

As 2017 begins, there has never been as much thought about Analytics in the Philippines as there is right now. However, the big question is it too little to late?

To me 2017 will be the watershed year for Analytics in the Philippines. We will either make significant progress towards being both a global hub for analytics and a significant domestic user of analytics or we will find that the opportunity was just too challenging to tackle.

I’m all in on betting on the former… lets make 2017 the year that Analytics in the Philippines became a success story.

The Four P’s of Marketing for Analytics Training

I get asked a lot about how I apply the 4 P’s of Marketing to my analytics training business.

The 4 P’s (Product, Place, Price, Promotion) of marketing are the foundation of our marketing efforts which have made DMAIPH and Dan Meyer, name brands in the analytics space within the Philippines.

img_0121

Our product is analytics training. That in itself is not easy to market.

Over the past few years it has gotten easier as analytics has entered the mainstream consciousness of Filipino businesses. Still, given the propensity for the subject matter to cause nose bleeds among non-data geeks it takes a lot of effort and foresight to be successful.

Product

Big Data Analytics, Business Analytics and HR/Recruitment Analytics are our primary types of training. Our training is for students, for analysts, for professionals using analytics and for decision-makers. Each type and audience taking distinct approaches to market.

Our product is unique in that no one else in the Philippines approaches analytics trainings like I do. Most analytics training is highly technical and narrowly focused on using a certain method or tool. My method is much more universal and focuses on unlocking the analyst inside the participant so they can select the appropriate methodology and/or tool needed for the analytics project at hand.

DMAIPH analytics training in the Philippines is what we do, and are very, very good at it.

Place

Our place is generally in Metro Manila, specifically Ortigas. Most of our trainings are conducted in hotel function rooms or business conference rooms. I have trained groups as small as 4 and as many as 80. However, the size and location though, our place is getting into the minds of the audience to educate, enable and empower the use of data in decision-making.

We have done trainings outside Metro Manila, anywhere in the Philippines is possible. I have also adapted my training for speaking engagements at conferences and workshops, as part of analytics expert panels and in college class rooms.

DMAIPH analytics training can happen just about anywhere, for any audience of any scope or level of knowledge. Our flexibility allows us to go to any place to train people to use analytics.

Price

Our price is now about 6,000 PHP a head per training. That is right in the middle of the market. There are more expensive ones that offer certain technical perks, but when it comes to a generalist approach to analytics we are the best bang for your buck.

We constantly look at competitors to make sure we set our price accordingly. The market dictates our price given the plethora of training options out there available to potential customers.

We also base venue, scope and size of each training on certain revenue targets to make sure we optimize our time and investment to assure handsome profits.

DMAIPH’s pricing is above all else fair. Our goal is to charge a competitive price that reflects the wide range of choices our customers have to get training on analytics topics.

Promotion

We promote on Facebook, via LinkedIn and using e-mail marketing. We also use the book and marketing visuals like tarpaulins and flyers at job fairs and business conferences.

We make great use of selling our brand, which is built on my experience of 20 years doing analytics and reputation of being one of the top minds in analytics in the Philippines.

DMAIPH stands for quality analytics training based on real world insights and cutting edge techniques delivered in an easy to understand way.

Adding key metrics to the 4 P’s of your organization’s marketing strategy is something DMAIPH can help you with.

Business Strategy with Analytics – Aligning a business strategy to drive an organization forward requires a robust analytics solution. What % of Companies Can Both Afford Data Science Teams and Understand How to Use them?

Woke up this morning thinking about the future of analytics and data science in the Philippines.

I created this image to help visualize one of the biggest challenges. From my perspective the majority of companies out there don’t really understand data science and probably cant afford a traditional data science team.

who-can-afford-it

Best guess is ever 50% of companies operating in the Philippines aren’t yet at a place where data science is practical.

The smallest group are ones who both understand data science and know how to use it. These are the ones who are players in the data science consulting, training and outsourcing business.

Best guess its about 10% of the companies operating here and just about all of them are big corporations with lots of resources.

The next segment is the ones who do understand the value of data science, but don’t have the resources to compete for a the talent it takes to build a top data science team.

I’ll peg this at about 15%. But its  growing quickly. Awareness and adoption are actually ahead of the talent, as you see so many “data scientists” in name only out there filling open jobs right now.

That leaves the 25% of companies operating in the Philippines who have money and resources but just don’t know how to get started using data science and building a team. This is the target market of companies like mine.

DMAIPH has the capability to educate your managers and decision-makers on how to use data science to add value to the business. We can also train your team in the basics of data science to allow you to cultivate a data driven culture and promote from within to build a data science team. And we can also take some of the load off your shoulders in the terms doing some of the data science for you.

Philippines Analytics Review – 2016

There is no doubt that analytics is now a big deal in the Philippines.

Now that 2016 is in the books, I can proudly say I spent the better part of the past year helping Filipino get more analytics in their businesses.

My primary goal for the year has been meet, so let’s recap how that happened…

My involvement in empower Filipino companies, students and professionals to make data-driven decisions has renewed my passion for being a top name brand for analytics in the Philippines.

As I think back the Recruitment Analytics training that DMAIPH and Sonic Analytics put on early in the year, I think about how HR professionals are now actively looking to get more analytics in their business.

The simple fact is there are more white collar, professional staff jobs out there then there are qualified candidates. And its only getting worse. Recruitment Analytics is the only way to stay on the cutting edge.

This was even more evident when I spoke in front of close to 100 HR professionals at a workshop called HR & Recruitment Analytics Techniques put on by my good friends at Ariva Events Management.

We spent the day talking about how get IT when it comes to recruitment. The 3 I’s of analytics; identify, inventory and integrate data as well as the 3 T’s; talent, technology and technique needed to make sense to the data.

I once again joined Ariva for their annual Philippines HR Congress. One of the central themes of the conference attended by over 1000 HR professionals was Aligning HR Strategy with Analytics.

HR teams are sitting on a gold mine of insightful data, but in most cases have not been able to take advantage of it.

Big Data Analytics has come so fast and furious, that it takes a lot of effort to become analytics champions and try and move a company culture towards more data-driven decision-making. This was top of mind for all the attendees.

At the same time I have been doing speaking and public training, CHED has been training teachers on how to teach business analytics. Their efforts to explain the Fundamentals of Business Analytics to faculty and students will go a long way in making the Philippines a significant analytics hub.

I have been honored to have helped several schools in adding my two centavos to the discussion about analytics careers for fresh grads.

Another moment of great personal pride came when I published my newest book, Putting Your Data to Work. This guidebook is designed to help Filipino professionals who aren’t too familiar with analytics, get started.

In early November, I was part of a panel discussion at the Big Data Conference at Enduran college. I was and still am super excited about the topic, The Future of Big Data Analytics in the Philippines. This is my passion, turning students and young professionals interested in analytics on to the huge opportunity they have in front of them.

A week later I conducted a Data Analytics seminar with DMAIPH and Sonic Analytics. The primary goal here was to demonstrate how having a thorough understanding of the data environment in a business can lead to huge successes.

Next up was a job fair at Trinoma mall put on by Job Quest PH. My goal here was to recruiting a few young professionals looking to get started in analytics as DMAIPH is looking for some marketing analysts.

A few days later I attended a Data Science event being set up by my good friends at Talas. This free event saw a meeting of the minds of a lot of thought leaders in data science as well as industry leaders in employing analysts and data science. Pretty exciting stuff.

The final 2016 event on my schedule was another full day training organized by my key business partner Ariva. The topic, Big Data and Business Intelligence, which proved to be a great opportunity to help people gain a stronger handle on analytics and how they can be an analytics champion in their business.

IMG_6912

2016 turned out to be my most successful year yet. Analytics in now mainstream and I love it.

Analytics for the Small Business

Analytics is about looking for patterns in data to help answer questions. Most businesses use analytics to help ensure more data-driven decision-making.

No matter the size, scale or scope, every business generates a wealth of business data. Every business has an opportunity to uses that data to drive more intelligent decisions.

The primary people responsible for conducting analytics on the massive amounts of data we have today are analysts. Analysts are skilled in using various technologies and methodologies to identify, inventory and integrate large amounts of data quickly.

The term analytics can often be used interchangeably with statistics and data science. What separates analytics from disciplines like statistics and data science is generally the speed of the analysis and the focus on solving business problems.

The most common form of analytics is business analytics that are generally used by owners, senior leaders and decision-makers to investigate problems, validate assumptions and to guide strategic planning. As a generalist, business analysts can help in a number of areas of the business.

Business analysts are therefore the most common type of analyst, especially in a small business. If you do a job search on the title analyst, as many as half the posting will likely be business analysts. However, analytics can be used in an almost limitless number of business functions in specific areas like HR, recruitment, marketing, finance, and so on. Each one can have its very own analyst.

Analysts have been around a long time, but recent technological advances have both allowed us to produce and capture more data as well as give us the ability to analyze immense data sets quickly. Thus we are amidst a huge boom in the applications of analytics and the need for analytics talent across the globe. Analytics is something just about every business leader is trying to figure out how to use more effectively in their business. To add to our challenge, the demand for good analysts is booming just as fast as the explosion in big data.

As a result, there is a huge shortage of people who are skilled in working with data to answer questions and solve problems. This is why you have seen the number of analyst job postings increasing at an amazing rate. In the first few chapters of the book we will discuss the quickening demand for analytics talent and why it is so hard to find good analysts, especially at the small business level.

If you are a business leader, manager, owner, and/or executive are not actively trying to surround yourself with analysts and if you are not infusing an analytics centric culture in your business, you will most likely soon see your business fail.

1075177_10151826941667425_1417094118_n

A small business needs analysts to make sense of big data, manage the storage of the data, and know when to use which of the 3 types of analytics (descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive). To be effective, analysts need to have business intelligence tools to create data visualizations and build business dashboards.

Three More Reasons I Love the Philippines

I recently blogged about three reasons I love the Philippines; the geographic location of the Philippines, the Heart of the Filipino and the opportunity to fulfil my destiny of empowering Filipinos with analytics.

The blog post as generated more buzz and had more views then just about anything I have published in the past year.

It is an honor and a blessing to be able to do what I do, to speak, write, blog, and talk about analytics to Filipino students, professionals, and businesses.

Recently as the amount of rhetoric between my country of birth and my country of choice has risen, I have come to appreciate three more things I love about the Philippines.

First, I love the healthy political discourse between those who see the future of the Philippines as a more independent country with those whose lives have been positively impacted by foreigners like me.

Everyone has a right to their opinion and I spend a lot of time reading them and considering them. As an American who has cast his lot, so to speak with the Filipino people, I will always respect even those who I disagree with.

Second, I love the fact that President Duterte’s rhetoric is forcing the American government to reflect on its relationship to the Philippines.

This too is healthy in the long run. The relationship between the two nations is very complicated when you consider the various twists and turns of our shared history. We need to have a continual dialogue about how to evolve together for the better good.

Third, my passion for empowering Filipinos to use data in their decision-making only gets stronger.

4.6

In a time of change, it is more important than ever to balance emotion with fact. A balance of meeting the emotional needs of 101 million people with the data that can competently predict the impact of various decisions is super important.

The upward momentum enjoyed by analytics and data science in the Philippines assures me once again, that I am in the right place at the right time.

There are many reason to love the Philippines… I could and someday soon will go and list more.

In the end though, to me, it is all about the simple fact that destiny has placed me here to do something important.

And that simple fact is truly a divine gift that makes me love the Philippines.

My Analytics Story – My passion is solving problems by bringing together the best talent, cutting edge technology and tried and true methodologies. Results Of My Quick Analytics Survey

As you may know, I have been working on a book about analytics and the data-driven cultures of companies who successfully use analytics. So, to help me in my research, I sent our a short survey to all 10,000 of my LinkedIn connections.

I asked just one question. “If the following business lines, which one is the business line in your organization that in your opinion best uses analytics when making key business decisions?”

  1. Sales & Business Development
  2. Marketing
  3. Operations
  4. Supply Chain/Inventory
  5. Legal, Risk & Compliance
  6. Customer Service
  7. Human Resources/Recruitment
  8. Strategic Planning
  9. No one really uses analytics in decision-making effectively.

Thanks to all of you who replied.

Now, I’ll share my results.

7% of my 10,000 Connections
Sales & Business Development – 20%
Marketing  – 17%
Operations  – 15%
Strategic Planning  – 14%
No One Uses Analytics Well  – 10%
Customer Service  – 9%
Human Resources/Recruitment – 7%
Supply Chain/Inventory – 4%
Legal, Risk & Compliance – 3%

To no surprise about a third of my connections indicated that Sales, Business Development and Marketing where the top users of analytics in their business. Using analytics to help track success in growing the business and making a profit is nothing new.

As expected, HR/Recruitment was not well represented. Given I will be conducting a training on Analytics Techniques for HR & Recruitment in a few weeks, this shows I’m spot on about the biggest need right now.

My U.S. Based LinkedIn Connections
Sales & Business Development – 18%
Marketing – 18%
Operations – 14%
No One Uses Analytics Well-  14%
Strategic Planning – 13%
Human Resources/Recruitment – 7%
Supply Chain/Inventory – 5%
Legal, Risk & Compliance – 5%
Customer Service – 5%

The most significant difference I saw when breaking our just U.S. based connections was that Customer Service was so low. Given how metrics rich most customer service environments are,  I suspect the low ranking was mainly due to the fact that nothing cutting edge or amazing is going on in this area for the most part.

I was also surprised to see that 14% of American respondents listed No One Uses Analytics well as the top answer. Still a lot of opportunity here in the U.S. for analytics coaching and training.

My Philippines Based LinkedIn Connections
Strategic Planning – 22%
Sales & Business Development – 19%
Marketing – 14%
Operations – 14%
Customer Service – 11%
No One Uses Analytics Well – 11%
Supply Chain/Inventory – 3%
Legal, Risk & Compliance – 3%
Human Resources/Recruitment – 3%

Given that a significant percentage of my LinkedIn connections work in HR and/or Recruitment in the Philippines, I was both surprised and intrigued by the fact that it scored lowest on the analytics survey.

So if you just happen to be in that 97%, then I have a great opportunity for you. I will be doing training in two weeks on this very topic

13350236_1069524879763933_7282179244107132925_o.jpg

Let me throw out a little disclaimer, this survey is really just for directional purposed and is far from the scientifically sound type of survey I would recommend in most situations. But my goal was to validate my  recent observation, that we still have  a long way to go before analytics has taken deep roots in HR and Recruitment in the Philippines.

Continued Growth in Data Analytics Outsourcing Market

http://www.datasciencecentral.com/profiles/blogs/analysts-forecast-continued-growth-in-data-analytics-outsourcing

Came across this interesting article and thought I’d share it…

The Trend of Outsourcing Data Analytics Activities

Over the past few years, businesses from all realms have come to accept the benefits of effective data analytics in understanding consumer choices properly and maximizing revenue potential. This has significantly boosted the demand for effective data analytics services in the global market.

However, not all organizations have the in-house knowledge, resources, and experience that it takes to analyze data effectively. What’s more, the resource pool of data analytics professionals has grown tight in the recent years, leading to a dearth of analysts who can develop competitively advantageous data insights. This has significantly boosted the global demand for effective data analytics services in the past few years.

The report on data analytics outsourcing market presents detailed insights about the major elements of the market and gives an overview of some of the factors that are impacting the market’s developmental prospects.

The data included in the report comes from a number of sources, including face-to-face and telephonic interviews, industry databases, and field observation data. Data pertaining to factors such as the primary concerns faced by the global data analytics market in the present scenario, the major growth drivers that are leveraging the market’s growth prospects, and the major trends that are defining consumer priorities in the market has been collected. The validity of the findings has been confirmed by cross-checking with multiple sources of information. The entire process of the research and development of the report also draws on the prior experience of researchers and inputs from industry experts.

I’ve sent up a couple of analytics team in the Philippines for clients in the U.S. and India. If you find yourself short on talent, resources and/or funding, I can help you get a team up in running in no time.
