This I Why I Do What I Do…

This is why I do what I do…

Ron: Hi Mr. Dan Meyer, I have attended Data Science Philippines Meetup last February 22. And listened to your talk. I am a graduating student, and a former Data Scientist Intern. I want to be a Data Scientist, but Companies need an experienced person to be their data scientist. I just want to ask, what job should I take first to become a Data Scientist soon? Thank you for reading my message, hope you’ll answer me.

Dan: Data Analyst. IT Staff. Development Staff. Anything where you get to use data everyday. This will give you some hands on experience that you can use to more towards data science. Basically you need to get practical experience coding and managing data. Hope that helps. SQL is probably the most versatile language to learn, but any of the ones you see listed in a data science job posting will help.

Ron: Thank you for the response Mr. Dan Meyer, I’ll keep it in my mind, that really helps. I am hoping to be just like you soon.

How is Buisness Analytics Used in the Philippines?

Another search result that lead someone to http://www.dmaiph.com

And it is a very good question.

Analytics in the Philippines is something that I have spent the past 6 years trying to champion.

We have come a long way, from where hardly anyone really knew what analytics meant to a time where just about every business is trying to get more analytics in it.

By far the most common use of analytics is management reporting. It’s not uncommon for the Philippines to follow trends in American by 10 years or so.. and this is true when it comes to analytics.

img_0010

10 years ago I was a business analyst and we were pretty uncommon outside corporate America. But in the time since then we have seen an explosion in analytics jobs and now in data science jobs.

The past year we are seeing that trend here in the Philippines.

There are some great business analysts here in the Philippines who do some pretty amazing things with business intelligence tools. But they are mostly limited to descriptive analytics.

The number of Filipinos who can do advanced analytics like building models and predictive analytics are few and far between.

So as of now, most business analytics focuses on reports. Occasionally I see some amazing data  visualizations or complex predictive models, but they are still by far the exception to the norm.

In the coming months you will see more and more trainings and courses built around more advanced types of analytics, but I have to wonder if its almost too little too late.

Time will tell.

Analytics in the Philippines – The Philippines is at the center of the action when it comes to solutions to the global need for analytics. Blessed with a solid foundation of young, educated and English speaking workforce, companies around the world are look for Filipino analytics talent to fill analytics positions.

DMAIPH was set up to facilitate these solutions and bring the talent and the business together. And that is exactly why I wrote Putting Your Data to Work, the first analytics guidebook designed specifically for the Philippines. Intelligence Gathering and Process Training in Manila

Another search term that someone used and ended up on my blog… wonder what specifically there are looking for.

I love intelligence gathering work myself. When I was at Wells Fargo one of my primary duties was to gather intelligence on others money transfer companies that compete with the bank for remittance market share.

img_8168

I was really, really good at it and had a lot of fun doing it. I’ve used that passion to help several clients since then.

Helping them look outside their business to start incorporating competitive intelligence into their analytics process.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has put together an Intelligence Gathering Process training for companies in the Philippines.

It sounds like something that would be really interesting to do.

Survey time to see how much interest I can generate.

Decision-Making Using Analytics and Intelligence in the Philippines

One of the cool analytics tools that WordPress provides its users is a list of keywords that are used by search engines that guide someone to a WordPress page.

Every once in a while, I review the keywords to see if there are ones I should add to my SEO process.

A recent one that caught my attention was “decision analytics Intelligence Philippines”. Maybe someone was looking for me, but I think it is cool that it came up in this combination.

I mean I selected the name of the company only because I had originally intended to call the company Dan Meyer Analytics Inc.

But that seemed a little too vain so I turned DMAI in to Decision-Making, Intelligence & Analytics and added the PH for Philippines.

SO that’s the story behind the name and its awesome to see the name is drawing more attention to me and my business.

Because there is nothing I love more than empowering Filipinos to use analytics to enhance their decision-making and up the intelligence of their business.
