Big Data Analytics:Big Data—It’s Not Just Size > 2/21/17

I will be speaking on February 21, 2017 at Discovery Suites, Ortigas Center, Pasig City  on Big Data Analytics and Business Intelligence.

With that in mind, I wanted to go into a little more detail about each section, starting with…

Enabling Your Business to Make Smarter Decisions Section 1 : Big Data—It’s Not Just Size

Participants will learn to Describe the Importance of Effectively Analyzing Big Data in Business Today
. Being able to explain analytics to non-technical people is very important for any analytics solution to work.

We will also come up with a Data Map to Analyze the Big Data in your business. A data map allows you to see how data comes into the business, where it is stored and how it is accessed. Knowing you data environment is key to having clean and valid data in your analysis.

Another goal will be Establish Clear Objectives When Analyzing Big Data. Knowing exactly what your end user needs, how they want your reports and what will happen to the fruits of your analysis will allow you to be much more value to the business.

I will show attendees how to Recognize and Apply Various Data Collection Methods
. Way to often we get stuck by not having documented are process clearly. Having an easily traceable and repeatable process will make your analytics life much easier.

In addition, we will talk about how to Identify and Resolve Problems Associated with Data Collection
. Not all data is good data. In fact cleaning data can eat up a lot of time, but it’s a better alternative to reporting based on bad data.

We will discuss the difference between Data Warehouses and Data Lakes. Knowing how data is used in your organization, who has access to it and what they do with it goes a long way in making sure your entire organization becomes more data-driven.

Finally, we will determine when to use Data Blending in your analysis. How to take all of the Big Data you have both inside and around your business and bring them together to give you a 360 degree view of things is also very important to success.

Thats section one… i’ll over the next 3 sections over the next few days.

If you are interested in attending this training, I can connect you with my good friends at Ariva Events Management who will be facilitating the program.

Why I Know I Can Help

All my life I have enjoyed helping people.

I tutored a lot throughout my education.

In college I set out to be a teacher. To not just help, but to educate.

Being in a classroom was not enough, as I learned the whole world can be a classroom.

As my skills in analytics increased, my ability to help more people make data-driven decisions increased as well.

Now I am at a point where I know a lot about a lot.

Now I have gotten pretty good at sharing what I know in ways that empowers and inspires others.

I have been doing this for several years now.

Talking about analytics, blogging about data-driven decision-making and writing books about how to use analytics.

This is why I know I can help you too.

Everyone needs help finding the right data.

Everyone can use new perspectives on how to conduct analysis.

Everyone benefits from sharing data and analysis to drive a strategy forward or to solve problems.

14285276_10154554275492425_804549674_oBig or small. Old or new. No matter what industry. All companies need to unlock the insights in their data to be successful.

Some do it a lot better than others. A few may actually be so good at what they do that it may seem they don’t need help. But odds are you are not one of them.

Data is everywhere. We all do some sort of analytics. But we never have enough.

Being an analytics champion, striving to help people be better at what they do is what I am all about.

That is why I know I can help you.

10 Points Where There is a Need for a Data Science Consultancy

My good friend Albert Gavino recently posted about why there is such a strong need right now for data science consultancies.

Bert is a data scientist in the truest sense of the word. So when he listed 10 reasons, which I think are spot on, I asked him if I could share. The 10 reasons are:

  1. Some (if not most) companies want to get into it, but are not sure if they need it.
  2. They need direction on how to do it.
  3. They need information on how much to invest in data science infrastructure
  4. They need people with skill sets to be able to implement data science
  5. Some are biased towards proprietary software while some like the open source guys like Apache.
  6. CEOs think it’s all about big data
  7. Data Science is continually evolving so don’t ask me about AI and deep learning….it’s still transforming things
  8. How much does it cost to consult for a data science? pretty high because we all know demand and supply in this industry
  9. Recruiters confuse programming languages and tools such as R, Python, SPSS, SAS, matlab, spark, scala, hadoop, hive, mahout (there are just too many out there they would get lost)
  10. There is a gap in our Academic Curriculum where they just teach electives such as Business Analytics which does lack a lot of information to the needs of the industry.

talas

So if the point is not already clear, there is a growing difference between the haves and the have nots when it comes to analytics and data science.

If you want to be with the have and leave all the have nots behind, you have to invest in a good analytics solution, a data science team and some technology to help you handle your big data.

Don’t Let Fear of Technology Doom Your Recruiting Efforts

One of the biggest challenges facing Recruitment professionals across the Philippines (and the world) today is a fear of technology. I hear this all the time when I talk with those involved in recruitment.

We all know recruitment is an expensive and continuous process just as trying to eliminate employee turnover is. Hiring and retaining top talent is the topmost priority for every organization yet few readily embrace the use of recruiting software or applicant tracking systems (ATS).

IMG_6912

Given that people represent a company’s most important asset and attracting and selecting the right kind of talent is critical for a company’s successful operation, it is really a no brainer that technology would be a key to success. However, based on both industry research and my own observations, it is the single biggest impediment to successful recruiting in the Philippines.

For some it is a fear of the cost. For others it might be fear of admitting they aren’t very good at embracing technological change. And still others are afraid they will need to rely on someone else to show them how to use the technology. No one is afraid that technological solutions to recruitment won’t help. SO getting past the various causes of apprehension is their biggest challenge.

A good technological solution can connect the dots between you and your candidates. This helps recruiters automate the entire hiring process from capacity planning, career portal, resume management, assessments and interviews, offer management, and extensive reporting and insights into the process.

All in all, you can supercharge your recruitment analytics with the right system to significantly speed up hiring, reduce costs, and improve the overall quality of recruiting and employer branding. .

If you know you need an ATS and are ready to explore, I can help you figure out which of the hundreds of products out there best fits your unique need. Not all of them are super expensive and when compared against the cost of hiring more staff to hire staff, ATS’s generally have a much better ROI.

Using Analytics To Validate A Candidates Primary Motivation For Work

I am often asked how to better use analytics in recruitment. Besides the fairly obvious ways like analyzing your pipeline for trends or looking at candidate demographics, I sometimes suggest coming up with a way to correlate candidate answers to items in their resume.

For example, what motivates the candidate to work. The question can be asked a number of ways. Here in the Philippines, it is pretty standard to ask a candidate why do they want to work. This is a different question then the more universal why did you apply for this job question.

The rationale for the question is generally to learn more about the candidate as it applies to commitment and work ethic. Common answers are I need to help meet my family’s financial needs, support my children, pay for a younger sibling’s education. The problem I with this question is that it set’s up a situation where the interviewer can feel sympathetic to the candidate.

As a counter to this, I train my team to look for a few queues in the resume to help validate the genuineness of the candidate’s answer. In short to do some analysis, and record some data for future analysis.

Most resumes here have a biodata section that includes things like parent’s occupation. This is a good place to probe more if the reply to the what is your primary motivation to work is family financial needs. You should also notate this and start compiling data on each candidate response that can then be used down the road in looking at their success as an employee if hired. You can also get a sense for what types of people are being attracted to apply for open jobs. Both can be very valuable insights when building some predictive analytics into candidate screening.

You can also look for employment gaps. If they are working to serve an overarching financial hardship, then there should not be significant gaps in their work experience and/or job hopping. This is a great insight into dependability and work ethic. Make sure to capture this data as well.

You can also ask them specifically how working will meet their primary motivation. Do they have specific costs and amounts at hand, or is the answer more general or even vague? Have they really thought through the cost versus their compensation? Probe to see if they have done analysis themselves on their own needs.

4.6

SO you get the idea, one simple questions with a short reply can actually lead you to much deeper analysis both during the interview and when looking at trending over time.

Ideally, every question you ask is something you can use to generate data. Every answer they give should be validated against the data in their application or resume. And here you create and capture more data.

In the end you will amass a wealth of information on candidates that you can analyze to look for patterns showing you who to hire and who not too. It can also help you determine that if you do hire them, what kind of employee will they become. Adding some simple analytics at the front end opens things up to a whole new level of data-driven decisions making in your talent acquisition process.

If you need a little help in adding or enhancing analytics in your recruitment process, let me know. Happy to help!

Conversation About the Reporting Mess

The other day I was hanging out with some friends who work for a company I used to work for and they were talking about challenges they were having with some reports. As I listened, images started filling my mind of the challenges so many companies face. Not having a good data strategy within a business is a killer to both productivity and morale, opens up a company to extra risk and blinds people to opportunities.

The first problem I suggested they tackle is validating their current Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). They need to analyze what is currently being reported to find out what is not useful to the business in making educated decisions.

The second problem is that the people who “own” the data don’t like sharing.  The place where I’d start with this challenges is mapping out the data flow. It would be really powerful to illustrate the different touch points within the flow and most importantly where things get stuck. Then it’s a matter of explaining the big picture to those who might be causing slowdowns.

The third problem is that everyone is too busy to sit down and figure out how to fix things. To solve this challenge, we will need to get everyone on the same page and agree to a common data strategy. This will not be a one and done meeting, but a series of conversations.

So to solve this, my friends need to start with asking questions about what do people really need. In many cases I would expect the answer is no. This is where knowing the architecture comes in handy, so you know where the data lives that is currently missing. After this it’s a matter of storytelling and influencing the “owners” of the data to understand how access to key data would generate more powerful KPIs which would allow everyone to get on the same page.

10592010_10152674958362425_1982237172_n

It sounds pretty easy and it should be. The ultimate challenge is really getting people to all agree on how to use the data. In some cases, it might take senior management support to get everyone to play nice. And my friends will need data to support their argument on how thing can be better and put some numbers behind their vision of a stronger data-driven culture.

This is where I come in. When inside politics and no one has time to lead the charge, an outside consultant might be the best solution. An expert in not just identifying the challenges and sharing findings, but someone who can actually help facilitate cultural change. People who are equally skilled in both the technical world of analytics and the social world of team building are pretty rare birds.

If you are in a situation like my friends, then I’m ready to help you like I helped them.

All The Tools And All of The Talent but none of the Technique… Where Good Analytics Intentions Go Bad

I have seen so many examples of this. A majority of companies throw money at analytics in the form of buying new technology, but don’t spend a fraction as much on the people who need to make the technology work.

A good analyst using Excel is much more powerful then a mediocre analyst using a cutting edge BI tool. Without the innate curiosity, knowledge of the business and ability to communicate discoveries that come with a good analyst, your analytics plans will fall short no matter what the sales reps from the analytics companies promise you.

Now we have the 2016 Presidential Election results to analyze. Most predictive models had Clinton winning. Most of the polls had Clinton winning.

So where did the analytics go wrong? Well, its definitely not the technology. And I don’t think it was the talent.

In the coming days, I am pretty sure we will find it was the technique.

It was not getting deep enough data.

It was looking at the data and seeing what you expected to see.

Curiosity was lost.

Finding new perspectives to make sure we have the right data next time.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign will be a case study in where good analytics where not good enough.

Analytics Culture – The key to using analytics in a business is like a secret sauce. Sustaining Excellence

Still super happy over the Golden State Warriors going the NBA Finals the past two years. Winning a title, setting the records for wins… The way they did it, was a marvel to watch.

They lead their division from the beginning and never looked back. That take a special group to be consistent day in and day out.

They won with a first year head coach. That’s saying something that things were set up so well, that a new leader was able to step in and excel.

They beat the team with the best player in the world. Role players stepped up and made a difference. They wore LeBron out in a way that he never saw coming.

Now can they be a dynasty? Can they repeat this success or was it just a one-time thing? We will find out this year with the much hoped for Warriors-Cavs Round 3.

When you look across the San Francisco Bay, you see a team that is a true dynasty. The San Francisco Giants have one 3 World Series titles in 5 years. They made the playoffs again last year and are always in the hunt.

11421572_751531328286130_17872014_n

Besides having many of the same characteristics of the Warriors, the Giants have been able to take things to the next level.

Like the Warriors, they have a lot of home grown talent. That’s a proven way to go in any medium.

The Giants also have true starts who are not as well-known as the stars on the team they have beaten. They are hard workers who give it their all time and again.

There are a lot of lesson business leaders can learn from watching the way these team succeed… perhaps a future blog post on that.

But for now, as a huge fan of both teams… as I celebrate once again… I can only hope that the Warriors can sustain excellence like the Giants have.

It’s a great time to be a sports fan in the Bay Area. Truly a home of excellence!

How do you measure excellence in your business?

Do you have a way to know what your “win-loss” record is?

Do you know where you stack up against the competition?

If you don’t, then you need analytics. The Warriors and the Giants have two of the biggest analytics teams in professional sports. They invest and it pays off.

How about you?

We can show you how to set up your analytics which will translate to a level of excellence you have never know before.

PATIENCE AND FAITH ARE OUR BEST FRIENDS

I wish i could remember where i found this, but it definitely speaks to me so I wanted to share it again.

“No one can determine the final destination of our life’s journey. Therefore, the next best thing to do is to keep our cool and have faith in ourselves. Whenever I feel I am detouring from my destiny, I try to remind myself that my journey is my path. It’s a journey full of peaks and valleys, sunshine, and rain. This faith allows me to explore unchartered territory with confidence. I am at ease to fail forward. Because even when we fail, we do not lose it all—we can learn valuable lessons, and build the foundation for our next chapter.”

Keeping a can-do attitude helps us to never give up on ourselves. It allows us to recharge, reinvest, and reinvent ourselves by melting down our fear.

And that’s how I will start 2017!
