This is a 3-6 month, paid apprenticeship program that will provide in-depth and hands on training with a range of analytics skills needed across various industries today. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will a very strong change of staying with DMAIPH or being referred to one of our key business partners.

We are looking for 3-4 highly motivated, tech savvy, young professionals or fresh grads to join our program. Past apprentices have gone on to have successful analyst careers in a wide range of companies including HP, Emerson, Citibank, Wells Fargo and

  • How to apply the DMAI methodology of business analytics
  • Advanced Excel Skills like Pivot Tables, Marcos, Formulas and Data Visualization
  • Using Tableau for Business Dashboards
  • Using SQL and R for Predictive Analytics
  • The key aspects of Data Storytelling

In addition, each track will focus on specific skill sets including but not limited to:

Compensation package is dependent on experience and skills, but in the range of P20,000 a month.

How is Buisness Analytics Used in the Philippines?

And it is a very good question.

Analytics in the Philippines is something that I have spent the past 6 years trying to champion.

We have come a long way, from where hardly anyone really knew what analytics meant to a time where just about every business is trying to get more analytics in it.

By far the most common use of analytics is management reporting. It’s not uncommon for the Philippines to follow trends in American by 10 years or so.. and this is true when it comes to analytics.

10 years ago I was a business analyst and we were pretty uncommon outside corporate America. But in the time since then we have seen an explosion in analytics jobs and now in data science jobs.

The past year we are seeing that trend here in the Philippines.

There are some great business analysts here in the Philippines who do some pretty amazing things with business intelligence tools. But they are mostly limited to descriptive analytics.

The number of Filipinos who can do advanced analytics like building models and predictive analytics are few and far between.

So as of now, most business analytics focuses on reports. Occasionally I see some amazing data  visualizations or complex predictive models, but they are still by far the exception to the norm.

In the coming months you will see more and more trainings and courses built around more advanced types of analytics, but I have to wonder if its almost too little too late.

Time will tell.

Looking Ahead To The Most Awesome Analytics Year Ever

A little over 5 years ago my Analytics Story begun.

The first year was all about validating my business plan of being an analytics resource to Filipino schools, companies and to a large number of Filipinos themselves.

The 2nd year was taking the concept, basic analytics training, and getting it in front of a variety of audiences to see what where the biggest needs in the marketplace.

Year Three saw us start focusing on the things that gave me both profit and satisfaction. Trainings for groups of professionals who were hungry to get more analytics into their businesses.

By the 4th year my priorities evolved to firming up the foundation of the business to ensure smooth operations so that I could focus more on what I do best; empowering analysts to use data to drive decision-making.

Last year saw it all come together. Year 5 was all about building a network to take my passion and do much more with it then my small team could take on alone. I trained more Filipinos across a wider range of need then I could have imagined. And yeah, we made a nice profit too. Also got my first analytics book published.

img_7910Now, as I look at year six I see the fruits of our blood, sweat and tears and I see nothing but growth. More and more Filipinos empowered to use data, across an even wider swath of backgrounds and in an ever increasing footprint.

2017 is going to be the most awesome analytics year ever, not just for me. Not just for my business. But for my beloved adopted home, the Philippines.

Most Impactful Ways To Becoming a Great Analyst

As a follow up to a survey I sent to several hundred of my LinkedIn connections a few months back. I sent the survey to connections working with data analytics on a regular basis.

I told them I was talking with a young professional just getting started in his analytics career. During our conversation we discussed what is most important to being a great analyst. I asked for their opinion, of the following ways to learn about analytics, which one has been the most important in your career path?

  1. Formal Education – A degree or certificate in an analytics related field.
  2. Self-Learning – Using trial and error and online resources.
  3. Subject Matter Experts – Being trained/mentored by an expert.
  4. Seminars/Workshops – Attending events to acquire new knowledge.
  5. Technical Training – Attend training on specific technical areas.
  6. Other – Please provide a brief description

 

Here are some pearls of wisdom from some of the replies I got… keep in mind these are all from well established analytics professionals:

“the most important in my career path is self-learning as most of the things we’re doing like journal reading and implementing algorithms needs less dependency with the people you are working with but requires collaboration with them and this requires you to solve problems by yourself and implement things by yourself but communicate them properly to the people you’re working with.”

If you don’t have the drive to do this, you will be an analyst in name only.

“Self-Learning – Using trial and error and online resources. World changes too fast for any of those others to matter.”

In the 15 years I have been doing analytics without any formal education in data-related fields I can say that this is 100% true. To be a great analyst you have to always been learning.

“your ability to tell the story behind all the numbers will make you an indispensable asset and an outlier in the increasingly growing population of analysts. Management almost always don’t have the time to read all the numbers in tables, spreadsheets, and reports, but they will surely appreciate instantly seeing the big picture presented in a “one-pager” report prepared by analysts. That almost always makes an analyst “great” in the eyes of the report consumers.”

Yes! If what you spend your blood, sweat and tears on does influence decisions, then you are working on the wrong place.

#2 and #3 have been important. Having a mentor to coach you side by side gives you accountability to progress in your work and learning curve. Naturally, this will push you to self-learn: trying out what you’ve learned and testing.”

Having a mentor is so important to help you get access to the actual learning experiences you need to evolve and excel as an analyst.

“spending time with the consumers of the analytics is especially important. Learning how they look at the data, and/or want to look at the data. What is important to them. What really matters. Too much non-essential information and you’ll loose them. Targeting their needs with relevance and precision will win them.”

Another big point that is often overlooked, if you are spending time producing repots and they don’t take customer insights into account, you have a big blindside.

“The most important thing to being a great analyst is to have a great sense of awareness. For me, self-learning has been the most important.”

I cannot imagine anyone being a great analyst if you didn’t have at least a bit of an ego mixed in with a Superman complex. Great analysts live to fix things.

It’s interesting to note that only 2 of the 50+ replies I got form surveying my LinkedIn connections said formal education is the most important.

Job Description for DMAIPH Talent Management Analyst

DMAIPH is looking for an exceptional candidate to fill a very unique role in our analytics training, consulting and outsourcing business.

DMAIPH is an international analytics firm with offices in both the U.S. and the Philippines that specializes in providing analytics themed training, consulting and outsourcing to its clients.

We currently employee over 50 employees here in the Philippines who are assigned to providing customer service, email support and graphic design work for a U.S. based client. This account is a mature account, having been established in 2013.

DMAIPH also conducts analytics training classes facilitated by our President & Founder, Daniel Meyer. Mr. Meyer is an author, public speaker and one of the most sought after analytics experts in the Philippines. Over the past 5 years, Mr. Meyer has trained 1,000s of Filipinos on a variety of analytics topics. We are currently building out a marketing team to grow the training business line.

In addition, DMAIPH has added a new client in January 2017, thanksmama.com . This new business line will be the primary area of responsibility for the Talent Management Analyst.

The role of the Talent Management Analyst has two primary functions; (1) serving as an HR Generalist (Recruitment, Compensation & Benefits, and Employee Engagement) for the thanksmama and marketing team and (2) using a recruitment approach to marketing and filling seats for DMAIPH analytics training classes.

Job Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of recruitment and/or HR work experience.
  • Experience in the BPO industry is a plus.
  • Four-year degree holder in an HR or Marketing related course preferred, but any undergraduate experience is acceptable.
  • Basic MS Excel skills.
  • A strong interest in analytics; using data to driven decision-making.
  • Experience and/or interest in graphic design a plus.
  • Experience and/or interest in social media marketing a plus.
  • At least an average level of English proficiency.
  • A pleasant attitude and professional appearance.
  • A curious mind. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate how they enjoy solving problems and looking for innovative solutions.

Job Duties:

HR Generalist (50%) – serving as an HR Generalist (Recruitment, Compensation & Benefits, and Employee Engagement) for a team of 10-15 mostly home based employees. Duties include:

  • End to End Recruitment of home based staff for DMAIPH’s outsourcing client, thanksmama.com . Thanksmama is a U.S. based online retailer of baby clothes and accessories. Staff working on the Thanksmama account are home based, Web Content Analysts and Graphic Designers.
  • End to End Recruitment of office and home based staff for DMAIPH’s analytics training business. Staff working on DMAIPH marketing include Junior Marketing Analysts, Graphics Designers and Admin/Office staff.
  • Compensation & Benefits, including payroll administration for both the thanksmama and marketing teams.
  • Employee Engagement, including contracts, employee coaching and discipline for both thanksmama and marketing teams. Existing policies and procedures are in place.

Marketing Analyst (50%) – using a recruitment approach to marketing and filling seats for DMAIPH analytics training classes.

  • Directly target connections via Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) to be invited to DMAIPH analytics trainings.
  • Conduct e-mail marketing campaigns under the direction of the Business Development Manager.
  • Create, post and share marketing content to attract more attendees for public trainings.

Please note that we are not expecting successful candidates to already have work experience in all of these areas. There will be a large amount of training, coaching and mentoring to get the Talent Management Analyst up to speed. Above all else we are looking for someone who is curious, who is flexible and who can take initiative.

Compensation:

  • Starting salary depends on experience, but the position base is 20,000 PHP a month.
  • After probationary period, health benefits and paid leave will be made available (up to 6 months).
  • Additional performance based incentives can be achieved for filling training classes and meeting HR metrics goals.
  • Up to P2,500 in tax-free allowances.
  • Possible 5-10% performance bonus upon normalization.
  • Complete 40 hours of work. This is a full-time job commitment.
  • Annual performance evaluation and compensation increases.
  • Standard employee benefits as mandated by Philippine law.

Location:

This position is primary home based. There will be a need to go into the field to attend job fairs, DMAIPH training events and occasional conference and workshops. Analytics in the Philippines: It Either Happens in 2017 or It Might Never Happen

A few years ago the then country manager of IBM Philippines, Mariels Winhoffer, kicked off a project to help push the Philippines towards being an analytics hub for the booming growth in Big Data and the Global Analytics Talent War. That was in 2013.

With 3 factors in play; the world calls outsourcing services of the Philippines, the exponential growth of Big Data the fact that the demand for analytics talent far out weighs the supply; it makes total sense that the Philippines step up and fill the need. Now in 2017 we have not really gotten much closer.

There are some schools offering some subjects in analytics related areas, but its far from being significant enough to meet the needs.

The government has given some attention to supercharging analytics, but the current outlook is not one where we will see enough to propel us forward.

Big BPO companies who are offering analytics as a service have tried desperately to fill seats,  but have generally seen limited success.

Now it seems that most Filipino companies have gotten a grasp of the power of a good analytics team and are trying to catch up.

As 2017 begins, there has never been as much thought about Analytics in the Philippines as there is right now. However, the big question is it too little to late?

To me 2017 will be the watershed year for Analytics in the Philippines. We will either make significant progress towards being both a global hub for analytics and a significant domestic user of analytics or we will find that the opportunity was just too challenging to tackle.

I’m all in on betting on the former… lets make 2017 the year that Analytics in the Philippines became a success story.
