The Self-Imposed Ceilings of Two Filipino Friends

I recently had two conversations on FB that happened simultaneously. Its amazing how we can do that now days, be engaged on two (or more different topics) with different people at the same time. But that’s a conversation for another time.

Right now, I want to talk about self-imposed ceilings people put on themselves.

One conversation was centered on being stuck in their current station in life.

The other conversation was about a resistance to embracing non-traditional learning methods.

In both cases, I was in empower mode. Trying to inspire both hope and self-determination to not continue down a path that seems locked in.

I will be the first to admit that as an educated, middle class, straight, white American male, there are few ceilings in life for me to break then just about every other demographic on the planet.

And most likely, my recognition of that at an early age has thrust me forward on a lifelong quest to help others who don’t have all the privilege I enjoy.

I am convinced that the blessing I have enjoyed in life need to be paid back in the form of me trying to uplift others to achieve success in life like I have.

And through a series of circumstances (which feel like a divine plan) I have ended up focusing most of my empowerment efforts in the Philippines. I love working with students and young professionals interested in analytics careers. That is what I have devoted the 2nd half of my life too.

And both conversations are stronger reminders that I am doing exactly what I was created to do.

Holding the ladder, or offering a hammer, or identifying a new approach to breaking through self-imposed ceilings for Filipinos has over the years become my great cause.

By now just about everyone knows that there is almost limitless opportunity buried in their business data. The big question facing business analysts, leaders, managers, and owners is how do I unlock that potential.

Why I’m Sticking with the Philippines

The past few months have seen a lot of negativity from President Duterte and his leadership team in their  comments about the state of U.S.-Philippines relations. Add to this the uncertainty around President Trump and his vision that suppresses globalization and threatens outsourcing.

The comments are sometimes a challenge for me to listen to as my connection to the Filipino people runs deep.

I grew up in Vallejo, California which has one of the largest and most vibrant Filipino communities outside of the Philippines.

The majority of my friends from elementary through high school are either Filipino immigrants or the children of Filipino immigrants.

My first crush was a Filipina. My junior prom data was a Filipina. I ended up marrying a Filipina. My brother married a Filipina. My son spent a year going to high school in the Philippines.

I not only love eating Caldereta and Adobo, but I can cook them really well.

I’m a huge fan of Jennylyn Mercardo and English Only Please is one of my all time favorite movies.

I have no problem riding in a Jeepney.

When I was working as an Analyst at Wells Fargo, I was deeply invested in making our remittance product the best in the business. I also volunteered to engage the Filipino community of almost 4 million at numerous events and promotions.

When I finally had the chance to move to the Philippines to set up my analytics business, I did so to fulfil my destiny… to empower Filipinos to use more analytics in their business decision-making.

To date I have hired over 200 Filipinos, have spoken at dozens of schools in the Philippines and have provided analytics training to thousands of Filipinos.

Like just about any American who spends quality time in the Philippines, I love the Philippines.

No matter what happens between my government by birth and my government by choice, I will always feel that deep down inside my place is in the Philippines.

Because the heart of the Filipino is truly special in this world.

And that is why I am sticking with the Philippines.

The Cost of Ambition

It’s hard to put a price tag on it, but let’s put some data behind the Cost of Ambition anyway.

I worked a corporate 9 to 5 job for 15 years and I rarely just worked 40 hours a week. And for a significant % of the time I worked on things that didn’t always interest of challenge me.

Now I work 24/7 but it is very unstructured. And I am almost always working on things that are both interesting and challenging.

I no longer dread waking up. In fact I am generally full of energy right out of bed.

Before I couldn’t always take time off when I wanted to because it was someone else’s choice. Now It’s always my choice when to take time off.

More time to do what I want to do… cost benefit is a plus.

I have a combined 20,000+ connections on Linked, Facebook and Twitter. I have many, many friends. But I only spend significant time with a handful of them.

Big network, cost is a plus again.

I do indeed spend more time explaining myself then I used to. Being an analyst for Wells Fargo kind of speaks for itself. Being a entrepreneur who set up a business in the Philippines to empower people to use more data and analytics take a few more words to explain.

Often many more words. That’s a cost benefit as well. I can make more money because I can do more things.

As I evolve as a businessman and a professional analytics champion, I do spend more time alone.

The air is definitely thinner on top where the higher you go, the fewer you really relate too.

That might be perceived as a negative cost to many, but to me I’ll add it as plus too.

It takes a certain kind of person to do what I have done. I’ve been told I have moxie. That I am bold. I do not fear much and I enjoy jumping into the deep end of the pool.

As my acquaintances grow, so does my competition.

It is important to look for collaborators while at the same time get used to being burned by failed partnership.

There is definitely a negative cost financially, but I learned a lot of good lessons. So this cost is wash.

I do sometimes feel alone. But more often than not I’m too busy to notice.

Ambition does indeed have its costs. More of somethings, less of others.

But when I add up what my choices have cost me, they pale in comparison to what my choices have brought me.

Success, satisfaction and knowing that if I die tomorrow, I truly did make the world a better place.

And that is priceless.

Being Part of Something Bigger Than Yourself

I share a lot of content. Sometimes I post in groups and on pages. Sometimes I speak at conference and seminars. Sometimes I do in-house training and consulting. Sometimes I blog or publish. And sometimes I e-mail.

It is only the last one that I generally get any negative energy from. I send out thousands of emails in the average month to a % of my combined almost 20,000 friends, connections and followers.

My emails are clearly not spam. They are generally attempts to open a conversation, solicit feedback or ask a question. I work hard to make sure they are relevant to the audience and will engage at least a small % of the people I have connected with.

I never send anything to people who have not already agreed to be part of my network. In fact the whole idea of joining a social network is to share experiences, discover new opportunities and add value to the lives of others.

Yet, every so often one of my email is met with a single word. A reply that lets me know my attempt to connect with this person who is already in my network was not appreciated.

Unsubscribe.

Remove.

Stop.

Now if this was a purely marketing email that was email blitzed and spammed to a mass audience, then that night be acceptable.

But my emails are thoughtful and I take time in crafting both the message and making sure to the bet of my ability that the audience will benefit from the conversation.

A one word, negative reply mostly like means that the recipient did not read the message. Likely they are too busy, too important or too bothered to take the time.

Some would advise not to take it personally. Just delink them and move on.

But if you know me, you know I do take it a little personal. I took my time to include them in my network and try and engage them. How is that not a little personal?

I am looking for a network of people who actually believe they can do things to make the world a better place. I still have faith in the value of interpersonal connections, even if most people think the point is lost.

 

When  I get one word replies, it just means I have more networking to do.

Hybrid Staffing Solutions – It’s Not Just Outsourcing

One of the challenges of my business is that it is not simple to explain to someone.

We are not a straightforward outsourcing company.

I don’t work with clients who are just looking to save money by sending jobs overseas.

Instead I offer a hybrid staffing solution. And what is that exactly?

First off I specialize in basic analytics. The types of clients we take on have a need for someone to analyze something in order to answer questions and provide solutions. We don’t do traditional customer service, we are not tech support and we don’t take on many advanced analytics projects.

If someone comes to me asking about predictive analytics models, the blending of big data sources or data science, I am happy to consult with them long enough to find a good match with a company who deals in these things. But it’s not what we focus on.

We are good at things like analyzing social media content, public data mining, building and maintaining business dashboards, conducting demographic research and gather competitor data. We use Tableau and Excel. We help people who have systems in place, they just need assistance with maximizing their value. This is what I teach my team.

We are a niche business partnering with companies who have a specific need.

Our clients are small to medium sized businesses in growth mode. I’ve worked with both small mom and pop businesses and big corporations. They both have limitations to our business model. Our clients all have an analytics centric culture, they just don’t have the resources to optimize and grow the business completely in house.

Another difference between what we do and what traditional outsourcing companies offer is that most of our team is home based. As a general rule, I don’t like the office based model when working with talent from the Philippines. Running an office team in the Philippines is very complicated due to the labor laws and competitive market. It’s us much easier to attract top talent at an affordable price by setting up virtual teams.

In the end, my success has primarily been because we find ways to merge the culture of the client with the team in the Philippines. We don’t look and feel like most outsourced teams, because we integrate the new team into the client’s culture.

Building An Employee Engagement Road Map

My good friend and BPO colleague, Martin Conboy’s most recent blog is pretty awesome and well timed for my leadership meeting on Monday.

Here are a few of his key points:

“Employee engagement is a workplace methodology designed to ensure that employees are committed to their organization’s goals and values, inspired to contribute to organizational success, and are able at the same time to enhance their own sense of well being.”

When I think about all the places I have worked over the years from scooping ice cream, filing library books, teaching, customer service, business analytics to setting up call centers, I often reflect on the cultural lessons I gained from those experiences.

As Martin says, engagement is a direct result of the methods  used to drive a business… its how people are bossed, managed and/or lead. That impacts how people feel about and treat each other. Most people generally look at their job as just a job, but they look at their co workers as friends or even family.

When companies are able to get people to think of their job with the same level of interest they think of their co-workers, then you have an indicator of engaged employees, That is far from the only one, but its an easy to see indicator.  They go to lunch together, but do they work together to solve problems for the customer?

“Creating exceptional customer experiences and engagement requires understanding and mapping the customer’s journey. Likewise employee engagement is dependent on creating exceptional experiences based on understanding and mapping the employee’s journey.”

Mapping the journey… from pre-hire, to job offer, to onboardinng, to training, to production, to coaching, to mentoring, to career development. Is it all mapped out? If not its hard to have good employee engagement. Are there leaders within the organization that help others read the map? If not then most employees are going to get lost. The journey will not likely be a success without the map and people who know how to both read the map and teach others how to read it.

Mastering The Art Of Account Management

I have been thinking a lot lately about what its take manage the relationship we have with our clients.

A long time ago, I learned that to be a good account manager you need a rare combination of professional and personal characteristics, some of which can’t be taught. To me account management is the art of representing my business to clients and vice versa.

The job requires skill, advocacy, diplomacy, leadership, expectation setting, intelligence, method, heart, patience, experience, and wisdom. It is not easy and it is something I am constantly trying to improve at.

With this concept top of mind, I thought I’d share some of my tips for being an effective account manager.

  1. Under Promise and Over Deliver. I have always strived to under promise and over deliver. Most people get it wrong. They promise to something they cannot deliver and things go downhill quickly from there. Losing your client’s trust is a surefire way to doom your company.
  2. Do What They Want, Not What You Want. We often get so busy we think we have to do it the way we are doing it. Even when it’s clearly not what the client wants. This is another way to doom yourself and your business. They are paying you to do what they want, so don’t expect them to keep paying you to do what you want.
  3. Communicate Bad News Early. It is far, far better to tell you client you will be late on a deadline, or you can meet the requirement or you have to modify what you promised then it is to go silent. Not communication bad news early, or worse to communicating the bad news at all is another strike against you and your hard work, not matter what you intentions.
  4. Be the Expert. When it comes to dealing with a client, they are expecting you to know every answer, sometimes even before they ask it. They are paying you for your expertise. So you need to be the one to find problems before they are problems, fix things before they break and always have a solution at hand. If you are not an expert on what you are being paid for, they will find someone else.
  5. Always Have the Most Data. When your client tells you there is something wrong because they saw it in a report, then you know you have pretty poor analytics. You are doing the job, so you should be the one churning out the reports, championing the sharing of information and setting the agenda for the next meeting.

That’s just a few of the things that come to mind when it comes to being a good account manager.

And just in case I need to remind anyone, and not trying to brag… but I am pretty awesome at this.
