The Time Is Now: Be Part of My Vision that is Analytics in the Philippines

The opportunity of a lifetime is before us… for those who really get analytics and using data to drive decision-making in the Philippines. Companies are so hungry for it. They need help knowing who to hire, how to train them and understanding just what a team of analysts can do.

To me the biggest challenge is the lack of experts. Good analytics talent is in really short supply.

One of the reasons I see is that so many Filipinos who would be great analysts are stuck in jobs that don’t allow them to be awesome.

If  you are curious, you work hard, you like to fix things, enjoy solving problems using data… but you are making less then 25K and stuck doing mostly admin work or running reports, then you are not maximizing your potential.

Thats the reason behind the video. Im speaking directly to you. Your talent, your potential is undervalued and misused.

Working for me with DMAIPH will change that.

Much better pay and benefits, great perks like travel and a company laptop. Getting to be part of awesome things as I take DMAIPH from a top name in analytics in the Philippines to THE top name.

Stop worrying about requirements and being loyal to a company that really doesn’t use you to your full potential.

Change you life forever, and do it today.

Filipino Analytics Talent Demand Awesome Salaries

It’s really hard to get an accurate reading on just where is the market is right now in regards to the salaries for analytics talent in the Philippines.

According to Glassdoor here are some average salary range numbers for several in-demand positions:

  • Business Analyst (with 5+ year’s experience): 30-40,000 PHP a month
  • Data Analyst (1+ year’s experience ) 23-27,000 PHP a month
  • Data Scientist (with Graduate level degree) 58-70,000 PHP a month

Those are just averages, in reality I think they are on the low end of what’s being offered right now.

One thing is for sure, the current demand far outweighs the supply.

Just looking at jobstreet.com you can get a feel for that demand.

  • Business Analyst pulls back 1,090 jobs in the Philippines.
  • Data Analyst another 822.
  • Data Science brings back 999.

Sure there is some overlap, but if you add all the unique jobs up its well over 2,000.

I belong to a meet up group for data science in the Philippines with 2,000 members.

That’s an open job for each of us… and pretty much all of us already have data geek jobs already.

In the near term expect salaries to continue to shoot up.

As nationalism and automation begin to impact customer facing jobs, more back office work like analytics and data science will grow in importance for the BPO sector.

Recently I’ve been hearing stories of Filipinos landing 100K a month jobs in data science. And good analysts are not far behind, being awarded salaries well over 50K a month.

It’s a buyers market if you have data geek skills right now. If you don’t., the time to get them is right now.

Analytics in the Philippines: It Either Happens in 2017 or It Might Never Happen

A few years ago the then country manager of IBM Philippines, Mariels Winhoffer, kicked off a project to help push the Philippines towards being an analytics hub for the booming growth in Big Data and the Global Analytics Talent War. That was in 2013.

With 3 factors in play; the world calls outsourcing services of the Philippines, the exponential growth of Big Data the fact that the demand for analytics talent far out weighs the supply; it makes total sense that the Philippines step up and fill the need. Now in 2017 we have not really gotten much closer.

There are some schools offering some subjects in analytics related areas, but its far from being significant enough to meet the needs.

The government has given some attention to supercharging analytics, but the current outlook is not one where we will see enough to propel us forward.

Big BPO companies who are offering analytics as a service have tried desperately to fill seats,  but have generally seen limited success.

Now it seems that most Filipino companies have gotten a grasp of the power of a good analytics team and are trying to catch up.

As 2017 begins, there has never been as much thought about Analytics in the Philippines as there is right now. However, the big question is it too little to late?

To me 2017 will be the watershed year for Analytics in the Philippines. We will either make significant progress towards being both a global hub for analytics and a significant domestic user of analytics or we will find that the opportunity was just too challenging to tackle.

I’m all in on betting on the former… lets make 2017 the year that Analytics in the Philippines became a success story.

Starting to hear a new buzzword for analytics… Fast Data. Everyone knows about Big Data that is growing almost exponentially.

It is coming to us in mind boggling sizes, from all across the Internet of Things and quicker then ever before.  The traditional 3 V’s of data (volume, variety and velocity) don’t seem to be enough anymore to describe the challenges we have before us.

SO now we are looking for Fast Data solutions, which means getting the right data you need at the right time with minimal delay.

The concept of waiting for reports to be pushed to you so you can analyze them is so 20th Century.

Now its all about being fast.

I can show you a thing or two (or a dozen) about how to supercharge your analytics by moving past management repots and even past business dashboard to start looking for solutions that get data to the decision-makers without any middle man.

Key Analytics Tip – Build A Data Map

One of the keys to being successful with analytics is having a clear view of how all the data flows into and through your business.

Building a data map to show all the entry points, all the places where data is stored, who and how it is  accessed  and what filters might change your data is one of the things I can help you do.

This is step one towards data integration and is a great exercise for a half day in-house training/seminar for any business or organization that is struggling to get valued out of it’s big data.

Per Wikipedia… Data integration involves combining data residing in different sources and providing users with a unified view of these data. Data integration appears with increasing frequency as the volume and the need to share existing data explodes.

If you can imagine a map of your business in your mind you are half way there. The next step is to build a flow chart like the one below

datamap

If you have something like this then you are on ahead of the game.

If you don’t, let us set up some time to discuss how to get started.

Analytics Culture – The key to using analytics in a business is like a secret sauce. It is a unique combination of analytics talent, technology and technique that are brought together to enrich and empower an organization. Big Data Analytics: Using Business Intelligence Tools – 7/11/17 in Ortigas

A good analyst uses Business Intelligence Tools like Batman uses devices stored in his utility belt.

Per Wikipedia, business intelligence (BI) tools are “a type of application software designed to retrieve, analyze, transform and report data for business intelligence. The applications generally read data that have been previously stored, often, though not necessarily, in a data warehouse or data mart.”

Knowing what business intelligence tool to employ to what data set in order to conduct analysis and present your findings requires a thorough understanding of what tools are available and what they can do.

The key general categories of business intelligence applications include:

  • Spreadsheets
  • Reporting and querying software: applications that extract, sort, summarize, and present selected data
  • Online analytical processing (OLAP)
  • Digital dashboards
  • Data mining
  • Process visualization
  • Data warehousing

By far the most common business intelligence tool used is MS Excel. Having at least a intermediate masterly of Excel is a good start in understanding how business intelligence tools work.

Learning to run formulas, insert pivot tables and produce simple visualizations using charts and graphs give a foundation in how to take data and do something with it to inspire analysis.

Using Excel also teaches you how data needs to be structured, formatted and managed. You can’t run even basic analysis activities if your data is not encoded in a way that your tools can make sense of.

Once you have mastered the use of Excel then the logical next step is using BI tools that pull data from Excel. For example, Tableau is a BI tool that can extract data from Excel to build more powerful data analysis and visualizations.

BI tools can also be used to mine data from large data storage systems like data warehouses, data lakes and data marts. Again, understanding how data is structured in important. Knowing how queries are written (for example in SQL) to extract data is important.

If you are looking to get a better understanding of what tools you should be using to analysis the data in your business, you can join my next training seminar (July 11, 2017) in Ortigas.

Quick Analytics Career Question

Greetings to You My Valued LinkedIn Connection,

I was talking with a young professional just getting started in his analytics career. During our conversation we discussed what is most important to being a great analyst. With that in mind, I’d ask you to share your thoughts.

In your opinion, of the following ways to learn about analytics, which one has been the most important in your career path?

  • Formal Education – A degree or certificate in an analytics related field.
  • Self-Learning – Using trial and error and online resources.
  • Subject Matter Experts – Being trained/mentored by an expert.
  • Seminars/Workshops – Attending events to acquire new knowledge.
  • Technical Training – Attend training on specific technical areas.

Thanks for sharing. As always I will roll up all the replies I get and blog about it.
