Stone Age Analytics

I was chatting with a friend about Peter Drucker’s famous quote, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

He made a point that made me think this lesson is still hard to actually put into practice even though it’s a 50+ year old concept. In fact the idea that a good culture is more important than a good strategy is as probably as old as man.

My reply was the best run caves where probably run by the caveman with the most efficient hunters and gathers, who felt a common purpose that their leader empowered in them.

In many senses, analytics has been around since day one. Even before we had basic math, just by observation cave men that survived told stories to explain where the best hunting grounds where and things like saber toothed tigers are bad for your health.

Centuries before Lean and Six Sigma, human engaged in process improvement. And Im sure the smartest cave man (or woman) in the cave ended up being the data guy who did some kind of simple analytics to advice the chief on who was the best hunter and who was the best candidate to use as bait to stampede a mammoth into a box canyon.

My point is, analytics is not anything new. In fact most businesses don’t have good analytics because they think its too complicated and too expensive. Now maybe employing a data scientist to build a state of the art predictive modeling tool, is a bit to Space Age for some, but everyone needs to have at least Stone Age Analytics.

That’s where DMAIPH comes in. We specialize in helping companies who feel like their analytics are stuck in the Stone Age evolve.

Here at DMAIPH we offer a variety of analytics training solutions to organizations here in the Philippines.

Our two most popular offerings are Data Analytics and HR/Recruitment Analytics.

We get asked a lot, what is the difference.

Well, in general the Data Analytics classes like our Big Data Analytics & Business Intelligence training this coming May 18, are designed for a general audience.

may18

HR/Recruitment Analytics classes like the upcoming HR Big Data & Recruitment Analytics training on March 14 in Ortigas, is designed for a much more specific audience of HR and Recruitment professionals.

Data Analytics attendees come from a wide range of companies and have perform a variety of job functions. The one thing they all have in common is that they are looking for data analytics techniques and technologies to help them get a handle on all the Big Data they have to work with everyday.

HR/Recruitment Analytics attendees are all working as part of Talent Management teams in HR, Recruitment, Training, Operations and other parts of an organization that primarily handle people data. So case studies, exercises and the lesson plan itself are all focused on how to use the people data in the business to enhance and empower people centric decision-making.

HR and Recruitment professionals can benefit a lot from attending the Data Analytics trainings and we generally have a few do just that. However, for a more focused approach to getting a handle on people data, the ones who attend the HR/Recruitment Analytics trainings will probably get a little more practical application to use when they return to the office.

Target Attendees for Data Analytics:

  • Data and Business Analysts
  • Managers and Supervisors of Analysts
  • Professional Staff who create reports and manage data
  • Decision-Makers who need more analytics

Target Attendees for HR/Recruitment Analytics:

  • HR and Recruitment Analysts

  • HR and Recruitment staff who work with a lot of people data
  • Data and Business Analysts who work closely with people data

Hope that helps you decide which one to attend.

How is Buisness Analytics Used in the Philippines?

Another search result that lead someone to http://www.dmaiph.com

And it is a very good question.

Analytics in the Philippines is something that I have spent the past 6 years trying to champion.

We have come a long way, from where hardly anyone really knew what analytics meant to a time where just about every business is trying to get more analytics in it.

By far the most common use of analytics is management reporting. It’s not uncommon for the Philippines to follow trends in American by 10 years or so.. and this is true when it comes to analytics.

img_0010

10 years ago I was a business analyst and we were pretty uncommon outside corporate America. But in the time since then we have seen an explosion in analytics jobs and now in data science jobs.

The past year we are seeing that trend here in the Philippines.

There are some great business analysts here in the Philippines who do some pretty amazing things with business intelligence tools. But they are mostly limited to descriptive analytics.

The number of Filipinos who can do advanced analytics like building models and predictive analytics are few and far between.

So as of now, most business analytics focuses on reports. Occasionally I see some amazing data  visualizations or complex predictive models, but they are still by far the exception to the norm.

In the coming months you will see more and more trainings and courses built around more advanced types of analytics, but I have to wonder if its almost too little too late.

Time will tell.

Analytics in the Philippines – The Philippines is at the center of the action when it comes to solutions to the global need for analytics. Blessed with a solid foundation of young, educated and English speaking workforce, companies around the world are look for Filipino analytics talent to fill analytics positions.

DMAIPH was set up to facilitate these solutions and bring the talent and the business together. And that is exactly why I wrote Putting Your Data to Work, the first analytics guidebook designed specifically for the Philippines. Looking Ahead To The Most Awesome Analytics Year Ever

A little over 5 years ago my Analytics Story begun.

The first year was all about validating my business plan of being an analytics resource to Filipino schools, companies and to a large number of Filipinos themselves.

The 2nd year was taking the concept, basic analytics training, and getting it in front of a variety of audiences to see what where the biggest needs in the marketplace.

Year Three saw us start focusing on the things that gave me both profit and satisfaction. Trainings for groups of professionals who were hungry to get more analytics into their businesses.

By the 4th year my priorities evolved to firming up the foundation of the business to ensure smooth operations so that I could focus more on what I do best; empowering analysts to use data to drive decision-making.

Last year saw it all come together. Year 5 was all about building a network to take my passion and do much more with it then my small team could take on alone. I trained more Filipinos across a wider range of need then I could have imagined. And yeah, we made a nice profit too. Also got my first analytics book published.

img_7910Now, as I look at year six I see the fruits of our blood, sweat and tears and I see nothing but growth. More and more Filipinos empowered to use data, across an even wider swath of backgrounds and in an ever increasing footprint.

2017 is going to be the most awesome analytics year ever, not just for me. Not just for my business. But for my beloved adopted home, the Philippines.

The Time Is Now: Be Part of My Vision that is Analytics in the Philippines

The opportunity of a lifetime is before us… for those who really get analytics and using data to drive decision-making in the Philippines. Companies are so hungry for it. They need help knowing who to hire, how to train them and understanding just what a team of analysts can do.

To me the biggest challenge is the lack of experts. Good analytics talent is in really short supply.

One of the reasons I see is that so many Filipinos who would be great analysts are stuck in jobs that don’t allow them to be awesome.

If  you are curious, you work hard, you like to fix things, enjoy solving problems using data… but you are making less then 25K and stuck doing mostly admin work or running reports, then you are not maximizing your potential.

Thats the reason behind the video. Im speaking directly to you. Your talent, your potential is undervalued and misused.

Working for me with DMAIPH will change that.

Much better pay and benefits, great perks like travel and a company laptop. Getting to be part of awesome things as I take DMAIPH from a top name in analytics in the Philippines to THE top name.

Stop worrying about requirements and being loyal to a company that really doesn’t use you to your full potential.

Change you life forever, and do it today.

Filipino Analytics Talent Demand Awesome Salaries

It’s really hard to get an accurate reading on just where is the market is right now in regards to the salaries for analytics talent in the Philippines.

According to Glassdoor here are some average salary range numbers for several in-demand positions:

  • Business Analyst (with 5+ year’s experience): 30-40,000 PHP a month
  • Data Analyst (1+ year’s experience ) 23-27,000 PHP a month
  • Data Scientist (with Graduate level degree) 58-70,000 PHP a month

Those are just averages, in reality I think they are on the low end of what’s being offered right now.

One thing is for sure, the current demand far outweighs the supply.

Just looking at jobstreet.com you can get a feel for that demand.

  • Business Analyst pulls back 1,090 jobs in the Philippines.
  • Data Analyst another 822.
  • Data Science brings back 999.

Sure there is some overlap, but if you add all the unique jobs up its well over 2,000.

I belong to a meet up group for data science in the Philippines with 2,000 members.

That’s an open job for each of us… and pretty much all of us already have data geek jobs already.

In the near term expect salaries to continue to shoot up.

As nationalism and automation begin to impact customer facing jobs, more back office work like analytics and data science will grow in importance for the BPO sector.

Recently I’ve been hearing stories of Filipinos landing 100K a month jobs in data science. And good analysts are not far behind, being awarded salaries well over 50K a month.

It’s a buyers market if you have data geek skills right now. If you don’t., the time to get them is right now.

Analytics Ain’t Cheap, Nor Should It Be!

Garbage In, Garbage Out is a common phrase I hear a lot when people talk about bad analytics.

Dirty, unstructured, error-filled, and/or inaccurate data is the bane of any good analyst.

SO when I saw a friends post asking about how to explain to a potential client that basically wanted an analytics solution done on the cheap, I suggested he not pursue that client.

If  you are creative and have the ability to be innovative with solutions, you can have good analytics that are affordable.

There are a number of BI tools out there that have free versions. You can do a lot of pretty awesome stuff in excel. So technology doesn’t have to be a factor.

You can also send people to reasonably priced training programs or have them self learn using online resources. That can save money.

But when it comes to the people. You get what you pay for. And if you want to go cheap on compensation for analytics professionals you will pretty much guarantee a bad outcome.
